Project

L.R. Costanzo was hired to build Cardinal Glass Industry’s new production facility, just a few miles from it’s existing facility. The new plant consists of 197,000 SF of manufacturing space, two overhead cranes, and shipping/receiving docks. In addition to the manufacturing floor, the team erected 9,000 SF of office and support space. The site was also engineered and planned for the plant’s future expansion including a building pad and exterior expansion to add 72,000 SF in the future.

Challenges

  • Site could not take the required bearing loads as originally engineered
  • Foundations were scheduled during the winter months providing a challenge with snow and freezing temperatures
  • Tight site for lay down area of construction materials, trailers and equipment
  • Coordinating and relocating owner’s existing equipment from their current plant to the new site

Solutions

  • Provided deep, dynamic compaction of soils that did not initially meet bearing loads
  • Modified the work schedule to include working second shift and weekends due to the winter month conditions
  • LRC worked with the owner’s equipment vendors to ensure the proper placement; utilities and installation of the equipment was planned and installed efficiently
  • Communicated and coordinated with owner’s building engineer/architect

Construction Details

  • Utilized K Cement for areas of the manufactured floor to ensure the highest quality finished floor
  • Assisted the owner with the approval process of the business park’s requirements including site selection
