Project

This 200 MW facility was constructed as part of a high-power-user business park. The project included full site-development for two data halls and a control building. The project team worked with the owner’s design professional to provide insight on constructability and procurement issues in light of the COVID pandemic. L.R. Costanzo (LRC) staff scheduled and coordinated not only the building construction itself, but also the high-voltage and process equipment. The site included hundreds of craft, including LRC employees, who completed the concrete and interiors work. The aggressive schedule was a driving factor to allow the client to begin their process. Construction was completed in sequence so that owner operations were able to begin while the balance of construction was being completed.

Challenges

  • The owner required an expedited schedule which included winter construction. Project timeline was expanded
  • Working during inconsistent winter weather; frequent freeze/thaw cycles created large amounts of mud
  • The mechanical system design was the first of its kind for this type of building

Solutions

  • arly planning and work sequencing were executed in order to build both buildings simultaneously. There was constant re-evaluation to maintain the schedule based on work conditions and material procurement
  • Since basins were not designed for mud, LRC utilized de-watering pits and newly installed storm piping to pump mud away from buildings, over the basin, and into a safe area. Vacuum trucks were also used. Roads and courtyard were constantly regraded and rolled
  • Used manufacturer to assist design team; conducted air flow studies and simulations to ensure proper air distribution and avoid short-cycling of air

Construction Details

  • Major electrical work was conducted, including new substations to power the operation with transformers and switchboards in order to zone-control the operation
  • A new, modular administration building was utilized to expedite the schedule
  • Aggregate piers were added to support the structure which is on farmland
