Project
As a General Contractor, L.R. Costanzo Co., Inc. (LRC) completed specialized construction within Croda’s pharmaceutical manufacturing facility. The project involved extensive interior and exterior demolition, including the removal of existing metal siding, interior walls, concrete slab-on-grade, overhead doors, and select mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and sprinkler systems.
New construction included metal stud framing, exterior metal panels, independently engineered blast-relief panels, and custom blast-rated doors and frames supporting laboratory and manufacturing operations. The improvements were completed as part of Croda’s continued investment in advanced pharmaceutical manufacturing and innovative drug-delivery technologies.
Challenges
- Coordinating work with multiple trades whose activities affected access to LRC’s work areas
- Adapting to a compressed construction schedule and frequently changing work fronts
Solutions
- Participated in weekly touch-plan meetings to identify upcoming activities, coordinate work between trades, and maintain project progress
- Maximized productivity during available work periods and established multiple workstations, allowing crews to transition efficiently when priorities or work areas changed
Construction Details
- Installed independently engineered blast-relief panels featuring specialized wire blast fasteners, with each panel configuration designed to maintain its required performance rating
- Installed custom blast-rated laboratory doors weighing more than 300 pounds and anchored into 10-inch poured concrete walls
- Incorporated protective guards and reinforced push rails into the blast-door assemblies to withstand impacts from material-handling carts
