King’s College
Project
L.R. Costanzo (LRC) was called upon to construct a new home for Kings College’s civil and mechanical engineering program. Named the Mulligan Center for Engineering, the structure expanded King’s campus in downtown Wilkes-Barre. This project added a completely new building, while fully renovating the existing space.
Challenges
- Multi-tier ownership group
- Building was vacant for over 20 years
- Limited construction staging area
- Complying with RACP (Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program) grant funding and completing in time for school’s opening
Solutions
- Coordinated closely with subcontractors, owner and architect “stakeholders”
- The team from LRC worked diligently to rectify the deteriorated structure and its components
- Created a lay-down area near site and employed “Just In Time” delivery
- A stringent budget was followed while maintaining an aggressive schedule. The team presented various value-engineering options and worked multiple shifts
Construction Details
- Restored existing glass elevator car
- Meticulously reconditioned soapstone stair threads and repurposed marble partitions from existing restroom to serve as stair landing
- Matched new building to existing building’s original masonry. Included cleaning, sealing and restoring the original facade
