Pennsylvania’s Capitol Building Capitol Preservation Committee | South Capitol Hardscape
Project
L.R. Costanzo (LRC) served as the General Contractor and oversaw the restoration of the South Capitol Park’s hardscape. This included select removal and replacement of granite pavers throughout the Park’s pathways; repointing existing granite cobblestone gutters: re-sealing granite stairs; rebuilding storm drains; refurbishing existing brass and iron handrails; and adding wall caps and cobblestone gutter edges.
Challenges
- Ensuring the repairs were aesthetically pleasing
- Working in an active site…adjacent to the state Capitol building and it’s activities
- Providing accurate measurements for the manufacturing of the new masonry units
Solutions
- Carefully coordinated with suppliers for submittals and shop drawings. Provided multiple masonry samples to ensure the masonry material matched.
- Created detailed safety and logistics plan for fencing and erected barricades and signiage to not interrupt flow of business
- Used Robotic Total Station technology
Construction Details
- Repointed nearly 1,000 feet of cobblestone granite gutter
- Removed and refinished all handrail systems. This included sand blasting and powder-coating metal posts, as well as cleaning and polishing brass handrails
